Florida DBPR
I was recently driving in south Florida and noticed this sign. I felt that I had to explain to consumers that a state license is required to install security cameras and burglar alarms among other low voltage items.
Electrical an alarm work done improperly can cause severe harm to both life and property. Be sure you hire only licensed contractors. This type of work is so complex that Florida has developed stringent licensing requirements for those individuals providing these services. Florida licensed electrical and alarm contractors are educated and Tested to ensure the level of expertise and intern your safety. Most people do not know this but Florida law requires an electrical or alarm system license for:
*The installation and monitoring of all burglar and fire alarm systems.
*Limited energy systems such as low-voltage electrical wiring in home entertainment and fiber optics when wired throughout its structure. This means security cameras with wiring ran thru your attic or walls.
*Most electrical work or wiring other than simply pluging in a power cord into existing electrical outlet.
Here are some warning signs to watch out for:
Beware of contractors for purporting to be the fastest or the cheapest, because hiring them may result in poor workmanship, inferior materials or unfinished jobs. Such claims are also warning signs of unlicensed activity.
* unlicensed individuals often targeted the uninformed and inexperienced as well as the elderly.
* unlicensed individual’s frequently travel in unmarked vehicles, soliciting door-to-door, posting signs on streets with markers so to give the illusion that your going to get a great price because you might be dealing straight with the installer.
* They often give a post office box address instead of the street address.
* They demand large payments upfront ask for cash payments ,ask for a full payment before the work is completed and convince homeowners to get the necessary building permits.
To verify a contractors license call 1-850-487-1395 or go to the departments website at www.myfloridalicense.com
Don’t put the safety of your family or business in the hands of a hand written sign on the street.

Stop soliciting at the gates.
Consider this you have a business and you don’t want drifters or solicitors to bother you but you also can’t make it difficult for your clients to get in. So a lot of offices decide to lock the door or add a remote buzzer to open the door when they see someone.
Buzzing someone in without asking them what they need help with just made the buzzer useless. Ok so another option is to have someone go to the door and ask how they can help but that again defeated the purpose of the buzzer because now your in a dangerous situation if the person has bad intentions and you can’t call for help if you need to.
Most of these scenarios can be avoided with the proper access control system.
All access control systems should also incorporate a video or audio intercom so that you can communicate with the person trying to gain access to the facility without having to go to the door. Also if the facility has an outdoor gate you should consider installing a video intercom at the gate along with access control so that the facility has different levels of security and restricted access before an individual makes it to the main building .
Safecam has been designing and installing access control systems for over 15 years and we would love to visit your facility for an access control evaluation and site survey . Don’t let the safety of your business or your employees be compromised because of lack of security.
Pictured above is an outdoor 700 LBS electronic magnetic outdoor lock along with a proximity card / keypad reader and an HD video intercom system with remote door release. This system enables the client to stop strangers from entering the facility property from the gate not the main door. Giving them more time to react to a possible dangerous situation.

There’s a reason why we no longer see TV in Black & White.
Video surveillance is not new; it has been around for quite a while. One of the first recorded application for closed circuit television system (CCTV) was back in 1942. It was used to view the launch of V2 rockets in Germany. In the US, commercial surveillance applications began around 1947. In 1957 a number of companies such as General Precision Labs (GPL division), provided CCTV camera systems for education, medical and industrial applications.
Early CCTV equipment and TV broadcast equipment shared technology. Both camera systems supported grey-scale video (not color) and measured and defined performance using NTSC standards.
Color cameras became available in the 1950s, and there was a debate on whether or not color was better for surveillance. Black-white (or grey-scale) cameras provided better resolution and low light sensitivity, while color made it easier to identify someone by the clothes they were wearing.
Now seeing in the dark is another matter we have to go back to the Second World War Historically, many armies would not fight at night because the confusion, lack of quality on-time intelligence, and increased communication difficulty made night fighting a very dangerous and very risky proposition. Only the most highly trained soldiers with a well rehearsed plan could take to the battlefield at night with any clear chance of success.
One of the first technologies to enhance vision at night goes all the way back to the end of WWII. The first night vision devices were introduced by the German army as early as 1939. The first devices were being developed by AEG starting in 1935 and has gotten so much better with the advancements in computer chip processors over the decades.
Night vision no longer has to be seen in black & White . Introducing the UNV IPC2222ER5-DUPF40 2MP Super Starlight Illumination Fixed Bullet Network Surveillance Camera with the capability of seeing a color video image at night with little or no light. Stop by our showroom to see this cameras impressive video quality at night.

Chicken Wire Won’t Help!
I was recently at a local business and noticed a security camera that had been surrounded with chicken wire. I must say very creative and done with great intentions. But the problem is that the other thing that they needed to protect was the wire.
Unfortunately most DIY security cameras and DIY kits from big box stores like this one are bullet type cameras. The reason why is because you can easily install them and adjust them compared to a pro grade security camera that has all the wires and mounting screws covered with tamper proof housing and case designs.
” Easy on , Easy off for criminals”
Don’t depend on chicken wire to protect your business and home have a professional security system designed and installed by the pros. Stop by our showroom and let Safecam design and install a security camera system customized for you and your home or business.
Chicken wire only keeps chickens in their coops.

There are professionals and there are DIY’s
Ok here is an amazing example of why to hire a professional and not a fly by day individual to work on a low voltage or electrical project.
In the picture above a DIY tech took a 110 VAC power supply and tapped into it with female speaker wire connection and secured it with electrical tape to keep away the moisture and prevent someone from being shocked. Also they did not use wire nuts to join the cable from the source.
This is a clear example on why electrical fires are started which could lead to thousands of dollars in losses and not to mention loss of life.
This is no joke you should always hire a professional company with experience for all your electrical and low voltage projects.
This individual was clearly none of the above and further more did not care about the clients safety.
Do your research before you choose a company.
At the end of the day the phrase is sill true
” You get what you pay for” quality and safety are priceless.

Only one way ; The NEC way.
When installing a pro-grade security system you should always follow the local and federal laws governing the installation of low voltage wiring . In this instance we are discussing the usage of Electrical Metallic Tubing ( EMT) . According to the NEC EMT raceway can be used on circuit wiring rated 600 V or less. There are a few other factors you have to consider when using EMT and other raceways. One of them is the full rate a conduit should not be filled more than 40 % of its size. There is also a fill rate chart on the NEC code book that tells you how many wires you could run through a particular size EMT or other raceways below is an example using category 6e wire and a three-quarter inch EMT.
According to the 2017 NEC code a 3/4 inch EMT can have a maximum of 14 22 gauge wires going through it. If we calculate the diameter of cat 6e with and without the spline divider it is equivalent to a maximum of 2 cat-6e with spline divider wires thru the 3/4 ” EMT and 3 cat-6e wires without the divider. Even though more wires fit thru this conduit with ease you will not pass an inspection if the inspector see the conduit has been filled more than 40 %.
Remember these rules are here for a reason not just for the job to cost you more money. No inspector will ever say to an installer the NEC is wrong. At least he or she should not. Follow the rules and all your jobs and inspections should always pass without any issues.
On another note when installing security cameras and many other accessories make sure that they are UL listed because some municipalities require to see the documents and the stamps on the equipment as well as the wiring. It would be terrible to have to re-wire an entire project because you purchased a wire or equipment that had no UL listing not to mention that after all work is done the wire does not perform as promised.

Access Control Systems
The term Access Control is simply an electronic means of restricting access to a building or designated area, like a restricted room. It may include doors into a building, access to certain areas within a building, or even access to outside gates as pictured .
Choosing an access control system (ACS) takes planing and design here are some of the things you should consider when choosing a system .
* Environment
Where will the equipment be located wether conditions , wet area , area with lots of foot traffic etc. this will determine wether the equipment needs to be wether-proof , tamper proof and other features that will narrow the search for brands and manufacturers.
* Traffic Type
What type of traffic will the ACS be handling I.E. foot traffic or vehicles, and if so will there be mostly private vehicles or commercial vehicles this will let you know if you need to provide ACS readers and keypads at different heights so that the larger commercial vehicles can access the readers without having to get out of their trucks. This will reduce the chances of damage to property from unattended vehicles.
* Entry Type
Another thing to consider is what type of entry devices will be used to enter the area. I.E. will you be using access cards ,key fobs, biometric or neither and just use a 4-6 digit code or a combination of both. There are advantages and disadvantages to these options . If a user looses their card you can charge to replace it and make some residual profits for programming time etc. The codes are good because you don’t have anything for the user to loose but a user can easily give out the code and now defeating the purpose of an ACS. The card in combination with a code is great because if the user looses the card and someone finds it they can not gain access to the protected area because they still need the code. This option is not very popular because of the extra few seconds it takes to gain access to the area. Biometric is the most secure and fastest way to gain access to a secure area and users don’t loose or forget the AC cards so there is nothing to replace. The downside to this option is that the upfront cost for the equipment is much more and since there is physical contact with the user and device the components tend to not last as long and require replacements more often. If biometric is the option you choose for your ACS remember that if the fingerprint reader is in direct sunlight at anytime of day you must have a shaded cover over the area to provide shade to the finger print sensor surface. This is normally an option for all reputable manufacturers of access control.
* Software
The software of an ACS is one of the most if not the most important factor when choosing a system . Ask is the software easy to use, does it work on Mac OS as well as windows, does it have a mobile version to gain access to the operating system of the ACS and this last one does the software have an initial cost and any additional cost if you decide to add more doors or gates in the future.
These are just a few factors in helping you decide what type of ACS to use on your project and are only tips. Please do your research and make sure that you don’t choose a system that was just created by a new company and in a few years when you need to buy accessories for this system or your client wants to expand ,you find out that the manufacturer when out of business and know you have to explain to your client that you sold them something that is obsolete and the entire system has to be replaced .
At SAFECAM we have a large selection of access control systems in stock and demos setup in our showroom to see what system will best fit your needs.
From a simple biometric stand alone door lock that DIY install in minutes to a large scale community access control system with vehicle gates , pedestrian gates , pool area restrictions as well as time and attendance.
Stop on by and we will be more than happy to assist you in designing and setting up an ACS for your home business or community.
