In this installation we used a 2″ Galvanized pole to extend the height of the camera from its original platform location. We used a pole mount with 4 x 2 1/4 in stainless steel straps. I was recently driving in south Florida and noticed this sign. I felt that I had to explain to consumers that a state license is required to install security cameras and burglar alarms among other low voltage items.

Electrical an alarm work done improperly can cause severe harm to both life and property. Be sure you hire only licensed contractors. This type of work is so complex that Florida has developed stringent licensing requirements for those individuals providing these services. Florida licensed electrical and alarm contractors are educated and Tested to ensure the level of expertise and intern your safety. Most people do not know this but Florida law requires an electrical or alarm system license for:

*The installation and monitoring of all burglar and fire alarm systems.

*Limited energy systems such as low-voltage electrical wiring in home entertainment and fiber optics when wired throughout its structure. This means security cameras with wiring ran thru your attic or walls.

*Most electrical work or wiring other than simply pluging in a power cord into existing electrical outlet.

Here are some warning signs to watch out for:

Beware of contractors for purporting to be the fastest or the cheapest, because hiring them may result in poor workmanship, inferior materials or unfinished jobs. Such claims are also warning signs of unlicensed activity.

* unlicensed individuals often targeted the uninformed and inexperienced as well as the elderly.

* unlicensed individual’s frequently travel in unmarked vehicles, soliciting door-to-door, posting signs on streets with markers so to give the illusion that your going to get a great price because you might be dealing straight with the installer.

* They often give a post office box address instead of the street address.

* They demand large payments upfront ask for cash payments ,ask for a full payment before the work is completed and convince homeowners to get the necessary building permits.

Don’t put the safety of your family or business in the hands of a hand written sign on the street.

Consider this you have a business and you don’t want drifters or solicitors to bother you but you also can’t make it difficult for your clients to get in. So a lot of offices decide to lock the door or add a remote buzzer to open the door when they see someone.

Buzzing someone in without asking them what they need help with just made the buzzer useless. Video surveillance is not new; it has been around for quite a while.  One of the first recorded application for closed circuit television system (CCTV) was back in 1942.  It was used to view the launch of V2 rockets in Germany.   In the US, commercial surveillance applications began around 1947.  In 1957 a number of companies such as General Precision Labs (GPL division), provided CCTV camera systems for education, medical and industrial applications.

Early CCTV equipment and TV broadcast equipment shared technology. Both camera systems supported grey-scale video (not color) and measured and defined performance using NTSC standards.

Color cameras became available in the 1950s, and there was a debate on whether or not color was better for surveillance.  Black-white (or grey-scale) cameras provided better resolution and low light sensitivity, while color made it easier to identify someone by the clothes they were wearing.

Now seeing in the dark is another matter we have to go back to the Second World War Historically, many armies would not fight at night because the confusion, lack of quality on-time intelligence, and increased communication difficulty made night fighting a very dangerous and very risky proposition. Only the most highly trained soldiers with a well rehearsed plan could take to the battlefield at night with any clear chance of success.

One of the first technologies to enhance vision at night goes all the way back to the end of WWII. The first night vision devices were introduced by the German army as early as 1939. The first devices were being developed by AEG starting in 1935 and has gotten so much better with the advancements in computer chip processors over the decades.

I was recently at a local business and noticed a security camera that had been surrounded with chicken wire. I must say very creative and done with great intentions. But the problem is that the other thing that they needed to protect was the wire.

Ok here is an amazing example of why to hire a professional and not a fly by day individual to work on a low voltage or electrical project.

In the picture above a DIY tech took a 110 VAC power supply and tapped into it with female speaker wire connection and secured it with electrical tape to keep away the moisture and prevent someone from being shocked. Also they did not use wire nuts to join the cable from the source.

This is a clear example on why electrical fires are started which could lead to thousands of dollars in losses and not to mention loss of life.

This is no joke you should always hire a professional company with experience for all your electrical and low voltage projects.

This individual was clearly none of the above and further more did not care about the clients safety.

Do your research before you choose a company.

When installing a pro-grade security system you should always follow the local and federal laws governing the installation of low voltage wiring . In this instance we are discussing the usage of Electrical Metallic Tubing ( EMT) . According to the NEC EMT raceway can be used on circuit wiring rated 600 V or less. There are a few other factors you have to consider when using EMT and other raceways. One of them is the full rate a conduit should not be filled more than 40 % of its size. There is also a fill rate chart on the NEC code book that tells you how many wires you could run through a particular size EMT or other raceways below is an example using category 6e wire and a three-quarter inch EMT.

According to the 2017 NEC code a 3/4 inch EMT can have a maximum of 14 22 gauge wires going through it. If we calculate the diameter of cat 6e with and without the spline divider it is equivalent to a maximum of 2 cat-6e with spline divider wires thru the 3/4 ” EMT and 3 cat-6e wires without the divider. Even though more wires fit thru this conduit with ease you will not pass an inspection if the inspector see the conduit has been filled more than 40 %.

Remember these rules are here for a reason not just for the job to cost you more money. No inspector will ever say to an installer the NEC is wrong. At least he or she should not. Follow the rules and all your jobs and inspections should always pass without any issues.

On another note when installing security cameras and many other accessories make sure that they are UL listed because some municipalities require to see the documents and the stamps on the equipment as well as the wiring. It would be terrible to have to re-wire an entire project because you purchased a wire or equipment that had no UL listing not to mention that after all work is done the wire does not perform as promised.
